A gas-oil separator is a horizontal or vertical vessel used by producers to separate the components of a fluid stream. There are two types of separators for oil and gas, two-phase and three-phase separators. Two-phase separators handle both oil and gas, and three-phase separators handle water, oil, and gas.
The intake diverter separates the gas, oil, and water. The process moves at a slow speed because the gravities of these components differ. The gas will ascend to the top of the vessel, the oil in the center, and the water to the bottom.
The gas travels to a mist extractor at the separator's top and is removed for sale or on-site combustion. As oil and water reach specific heights, they trigger the liquid level control system which regulates the amount of fluid in a tank. The dump valve dumps liquid from the vessel.
