An oil and gas professional who holds a PhD in petroleum engineering, Ivor R. Ellul serves as the managing director of CiSK Ventures, Ltd., and as an executive advisor to the Promethean Energy Corporation. A petroleum engineer, Ivor Ellul is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
A nonprofit organization, SPE is committed to supporting the future engineers of the petroleum industry. One way it does this is through scholarships and student paper contests.
SPE coordinates student paper contests across 14 regions in North America, South America, Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific region. Contests are held at three levels: undergraduate, master’s, and PhD. Students in each region compete against each other, and the winners advance to the International Student Paper Contest, held at the Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition.
Only students who are in good standing with SPE and enrolled in a full-time course at a university can apply to enter the regional contests. Applications can only be made to contest categories matching a student’s education level. Applications are made by submitting abstracts of papers to be presented personally on the day of the regional competition. Papers are judged on matters such as their significance in the field of energy extraction or production, whether the approach to the subject is logical and systematic, and if the paper shows evidence of extensive laboratory work, computer programming development, or a detailed literature survey.
